Thai has their unique culture of how to greeting to the others, it is called “WAI” = “ไหว้”
WAI is a gesture used to say hello. It is also a sign respect to the others while greeting.
Thai will say “สวัสดี ค่ะ/ครับ sà-wàt-dee khâa/kráp" and immediate do “WAI” at the same time for greeting one another.
How to do “WAI” = “ไหว้”
WAI has been defined by three forms-they are used by depend on the level of seniority of the people being greeted.
Okay, here we go for the three forms of “WAI” = “ไหว้” as below:
1. The form of “WAI” = “ไหว้” to use for greeting royal family, monks, priests.
How to do:
Do the same as the way as no. 2, but the index fingers touch your nose and bow.
Take note:
When someone gives you a “WAI” = “ไหว้”, it usually means that they respect toward you.
It is highly recommended that you have to WAI back to them.
To do receiving WAI;-
Just put your palms together and in front of your chest and say "สวัสดีค่ะ [sà-wàt-dee khâa]" if you are female or "สวัสดีครับ [sà-wàt-dee kráp]" if you are male.
