Hello again! I'm Michael Leng, and it's great to connect with you. As the owner of several weblogs dedicated to helping you learn Thai, I'm always excited to share new insights into the language.
What to Say When You're "Not Very Good" in Thai
You already know how to ask "How are you?" in Thai – คุณสบายดีไหม (khun sà-baai dee mái) – and how to respond positively with ดิฉันสบายดีค่ะ / ขอบคุณ (dì-chăn sà-baai dee kâa / kòp kun) meaning "I'm fine, thank you." (If you missed those, you can always check out my previous posts on greetings!)
But what if you're not feeling so great, or just "so-so"? Today, I'm going to teach you how to respond to "How are you?" in Thai when you're not doing well, or when things are just okay.
Responding When You're Not Feeling Well or Just Okay
Let's dive into the phrases you can use:
ไม่สบาย (mâi sà-baai)
Pronunciation: mai sa-baai
Meaning: Not very good. / I'm sick.
This phrase literally translates to "not comfortable" or "not well." It's commonly used to express that you're feeling unwell or sick.
เรื่อยๆ (rêuay rêuay)
Pronunciation: reu-ay reu-ay (said with a drawn-out, even tone)
Meaning: So-so. / Just getting by.
This is a casual and common way to say that things are neither good nor bad, just "so-so" or "same old, same old."
Adding Politeness: "ครับ (kráp)" and "ค่ะ (kâa)"
To make your responses polite and natural, remember to add the appropriate politeness particle at the end of your sentence:
If you are male, add ครับ (kráp).
If you are female, add ค่ะ (kâa).
Let's see these in action:
If the speaker is male:
ไม่สบาย ครับ (mâi sà-baai kráp)
Meaning: Not very good. / I'm sick.
เรื่อยๆ ครับ (rêuay rêuay kráp)
Meaning: So-so.
If the speaker is female:
ไม่สบาย ค่ะ (mâi sà-baai kâa)
Meaning: Not very good. / I'm sick.
เรื่อยๆ ค่ะ (rêuay rêuay kâa)
Meaning: So-so.
Quick Practice Test:
Imagine a friend asks you, "How are you?" and you're feeling a bit under the weather. How would you respond if you're a male speaker?
Now, imagine you're a female speaker and things are just "okay." How would you reply?
(Give your answers a try mentally or out loud!)
Now you're equipped to respond to "How are you?" in Thai, no matter how you're feeling! Knowing phrases like ไม่สบาย (mâi sà-baai) for "I'm sick" and เรื่อยๆ (rêuay rêuay) for "so-so," along with the essential politeness particles ครับ (kráp) and ค่ะ (kâa), will significantly enhance your conversational skills and allow for more authentic interactions. Keep practicing, and you'll be speaking Thai more naturally in no time!
