34. คุณอายุเท่าไหร่ : How Old Are You? | Learn How To Make A Question Sentence In Thai

สวัสดีทุกคนครับ
(Sawatdi khrup)
Hi, everybody.

สบายดีไหมครับ
(Sabai di mai khrup)
How are you?

I'm Michael Leng. I'm glad for coming back to see you all again. Today, we are going to learn Thai how to make an interrogative sentence (ประโยคคำถาม [bprà-yòhk kam tăam])

“How old are you?”

in Thai language.

Here we go! See how to write and pronounce as the example sentence below:

คุณ อายุ เท่าไหร่
khun aa-yú tâo rài
How old are you?

Therefore, if you were questioned as the above sentence, you should reply like this below:

If you are female, you say this:

ฉัน อายุ สามสิบ ปี ค่ะ
chăn aa-yú săam sìp bpee kâa
I am 30 years old.

Of course, if you are male, you must use the sentence to say below:

ผม อายุ สี่สิบ ปี ครับ
pŏm aa-yú sèe sìp bpee kráp
I am 40 years old.

Let us break down the above sentences together.

ฉัน [chan] is a pronoun for woman in the meaning of the word "I" and "Me" in Thai. You will see also the particle ค่ะ[kâa] which is for female to use by put at the end of sentences.

ผม [pŏm] is a pronoun for man to use as I, me. And ครับ[kráp] is a Thai particle for only male to use it.

Both particles ค่ะ[kâa] and ครับ[kráp] are used by female and male respectively. They are added at the end of any sentence for indicating how speakers pay respect to their listeners.

That brings me to the end of the today's posting. Thank you for your kind attention and reading our blog.

Bye,

ครับ kráp Thai particle putting at the end of sentence for men use indicating more polite; "yes"; "that's right"; "I see."
ค่ะ kâa Thai particle for women use indicating more polite(affirmative sentence); "yes"; "that's right"; "I see."
คุณ khun Title, of Pali/Sanskrit origin Mr ; Mrs ; Miss ; Ms (คุณ , usually transliterated as ""Khun"", is a standard polite and relatively formal title used before the names of both men and women in Thai. Unlike the English equivalent titles though, "Khun"" is always used before first names and not surnames. This is a practice many Thais carry over when talking in English, so in Thailand John Smith would frequently be called Mr John (Khun John) rather than Mr Smith. This habit leaves the English of many Thais sounding somewhat more informal than they intended.)
ฉัน chăn Pronoun I, me: Commonly used by females (Occasionally, monks and men might use it too).
เท่าไหร่ tâo rài Adverb: however much; Interrogative: how much ; how many
ปี bpee Noun, Classifier. year (ปี is the classifier for years and years of age.)
ผม pŏm Personal Pronoun: I ; me (used by men only)
สามสิบ săam sìp Quantifier thirty ; 30
สี่สิบ sèe sìp Quantifier fourty ; 40
อายุ aa-yú Noun, of Pali/Sanskrit origin age

  2. That's beyond my expectation how well your Thai is! Of course, you can add the particle "krup= ครับ" at the end of any sentence for show up how you respect to your listener(s).

Thus, your line will be in Thai as "คุณอายุเท่าไหร่ครับ"

    Thanks :)
